What this is: an industry's share index is a basket of that industry's biggest listed companies, weighted by size, so the biggest ones move it most (for IT, Infosys and TCS). Each figure compares the index's official closing value on 6 Oct 2026 with its last close of 2025. What it is not: dividends are not counted, and it is not advice; it says nothing about what comes next.

How it is measured

Each column compares an industry share index's closing value on 6 Oct 2026 with its last close of 2025 (31 Dec 2025). An industry share index is a basket of that industry's biggest listed companies, weighted by their size, so the biggest ones move it most (for IT, Infosys and TCS). The ten indices: IT services = Nifty IT (10 companies); Daily goods = Nifty FMCG (15 companies); Oil & gas = Nifty Oil & Gas (15 companies); Banks & finance = Nifty Financial Services (20 companies); Vehicles & parts = Nifty Auto (15 companies); Property = Nifty Realty (10 companies); Appliances & jewellery = Nifty Consumer Durables (13 companies); Media = Nifty Media (10 companies); Metals & mining = Nifty Metal (15 companies); Medicine makers = Nifty Pharma (20 companies).

The company counts are the companies in each index today; an index's members change twice a year. Vehicles & parts includes makers of parts and tractors; Appliances & jewellery (the consumer durables index) holds appliance and electronics makers plus jewellers, a shoe maker and a tile maker; Oil & gas's biggest company, Reliance, also runs shops and phone networks; Metals & mining also holds an iron ore miner and Adani Enterprises, a group with many businesses. Left out on purpose, so no company is shown twice: the broad size indices (Nifty 50, 100, 500, Next 50, Midcap, Smallcap), and Nifty Bank (14 companies, 5 already in the ten: its biggest banks are already in Banks & finance); Nifty Private Bank (10 companies, 4 already in the ten: its biggest banks are already in Banks & finance); Nifty PSU Bank (12 companies, 1 already in the ten: a slice of the banks; the biggest govt bank, SBI, is already in Banks & finance); Nifty Healthcare (20 companies, 16 already in the ten: most of its companies are the medicine makers already shown; the rest are hospitals and labs); Nifty Energy (40 companies, 13 already in the ten: shares its biggest companies with Oil & gas and adds power companies); Nifty Infrastructure (30 companies, 10 already in the ten: a mix of other industries); Nifty Commodities (30 companies, 13 already in the ten: a mix of other industries); Nifty PSE (20 companies, 11 already in the ten: govt-owned companies from many industries).

The 6 Oct 2026 values come from the market's daily closing figures, used because they matched the official closing values to the paisa on 5 Oct 2026 (the latest day both were available for all ten) and on every later day both held. Check that the biggest fall is broad: of the 10 companies in the Nifty IT today, 10 had official prices for the whole period, and 8 of them closed lower on 5 Oct 2026 than at the end of 2025. "₹100 → ₹X" is what ₹100 at the index's level at the start of the year would be worth now. Index values only: dividends are not counted.

It reports what happened this year and says nothing about what comes next.
