Just over half of companies profited all five years
Each column counts companies by how many of the five years to March 2026 ended in a profit. 3,703 companies.

What the chart shows
Of 3,703 listed companies with five full years of results, 1,984 (53.6%) made a profit in every one of the five years to March 2026.
Years with a profit, out of five (April 2021 to March 2026)
| All 5 years | 1,984 companies (53.6%) |
|---|---|
| 4 of 5 | 534 companies (14.4%) |
| 3 of 5 | 375 companies (10.1%) |
| 2 of 5 | 310 companies (8.4%) |
| 1 of 5 | 283 companies (7.6%) |
| None of the 5 | 217 companies (5.9%) |
2,518 companies (68.0%) made a profit in at least four of the five years. 217 (5.9%) made no profit in any of them.
A year counts as a profit when profit after tax was above zero. It says nothing about how big the profit was or whether it grew. Companies without all five years of results on file are left out (888 of them).
How it is measured
Each company is counted once, from the full-year results it filed for the five years April 2021 to March 2026 (FY22 to FY26). A year counts as a profit when profit after tax is above zero (for a group, the whole group's profit after tax, including any one-off gains or losses). Results for the whole group (consolidated) are used when a company has them for all five years (1,636 companies), results for the company alone (standalone) otherwise (2,067); the two are never mixed within one company.
Where a year has more than one version on file, the latest is used. 888 companies with at least one full year in the window are left out because we do not hold all five, 757 of them with results for the year to March 2026. 4 companies had a year with profit of exactly zero, which does not count as a profit. A profit streak says nothing about how big the profit was or whether it grew.
